Aspen Medical’s work at the Lihir Medical Centre in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland group of islands is a great example of delivering quality healthcare in a remote and challenging location. Lihir Island is 900km northeast of Port Moresby, supported by a daylight only airport and barge services to remote surrounding Islands.
With 65 dedicated medical professionals on the ground, healthcare services are provided 24/7 across three campuses on Lihir to cover a wide range of primary healthcare services to both the employees of our client in the gold mining industry and the local community. The service also includes a 22-bed hospital, emergency department (ED), operating theatre (OT), a maternity service with approximately 40 deliveries per month, radiology and comprehensive laboratory service, occupational health services and public health programs.
Since taking over the Medical Centre in October 2024 the team has been working hard to build community confidence and accelerate evidenced-based quality of care for the entire population.
Kristi Payten, Aspen Medical’s General Manager - Clinical Service Delivery, shared, “Our Lihir Medical Services currently sees more patients over the course of a month than the whole of Aspen Medical’s Australian operations does each quarter.”
The Lihir team have recently formed part of the Aspen Medical Global Clinical Community of Practice and are collaborating with our global clinical networks on a range of topics to include neonatal care, blood management and the creation of peer networks of paramedicine, laboratory, biomed, physio, IPC and pharmacy. This reflects the power of Aspen Medical’s global network - working together to share experience and expertise to support clinicians globally where it’s needed most.
Let's hear it for our team in Lihir!
