Aspen Medical-managed Lautoka Hospital has welcomed a team of Australian oncology specialists as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cancer care services and specialist capability in Fiji.

The two-day visit brought together Australian medical oncologists A/Prof Anne Hamilton, A/Prof Alison Davis and Dr Avinash Sharma with clinicians and healthcare teams at Lautoka Hospital to support the continued development of oncology services.

Cancer care is becoming an increasingly important area of healthcare across the Pacific. Building local capability and strengthening specialist services helps ensure people in Fiji can access high-quality cancer care closer to home.

Working alongside Fijian clinicians, the visiting specialists provided input into the assessment and management of oncology patients, including complex cases. They also reviewed chemotherapy protocols and systemic therapy planning to support the delivery of safe, effective and context-appropriate treatment.

A key focus of the visit was multidisciplinary cancer care. The team participated in discussions involving medical oncology, gynaecologic oncology, surgery, pathology, radiology and palliative care specialists, supporting coordinated and evidence-informed treatment planning.

The visit also provided an opportunity to review and refine oncology treatment protocols, including chemotherapy regimens, toxicity management processes and referral pathways. Discussions explored how international best practice can be adapted to Fiji's healthcare environment and considered future service requirements as Fiji prepares for the introduction of radiation oncology services.

Supporting the development of Fiji's healthcare workforce was another important component of the visit. The specialists provided mentorship and professional development opportunities for doctors, trainees and nurses through bedside teaching, case reviews and practical training sessions within the chemotherapy service.

The delegation also met with stakeholders involved in medical education to discuss opportunities to strengthen oncology training within existing postgraduate programs and support ongoing professional development for healthcare practitioners.

Aspen Medical manages Lautoka Hospital and is committed to supporting the delivery of high-quality healthcare services for the people of Fiji. Partnerships such as this help strengthen local clinical capability, support service development and ensure healthcare professionals have access to specialist expertise and knowledge.
