At Aspen Medical, our people are driven not only by professional excellence but also by a deep commitment to community. One of those people is Casey Wilson, our Marketing and Events Manager based at the Canberra head office. Whilst Casey is known for her skill in delivering high-impact campaigns and events, she’s also making a quiet but powerful impact outside of work, volunteering her time at Ronald McDonald House Charities, Canberra (RMHC).

Thanks to Aspen Medical’s commitment to social impact, which includes two paid volunteer leave days per year, Casey has found meaningful ways to support families going through incredibly tough times.

One or two Saturday mornings per month, Casey spends four hours helping at RMHC. Her shift involves a mix of household tasks cleaning, laundry, flipping rooms for new families, restocking supplies and something just as important: emotional support.

“There are always odd jobs that need doing, so we stay busy and I always get my steps up!” she jokes. “But more than the chores, I spend time chatting with the families, learning about their babies, and just trying to keep the vibes of the house positive.”

Although she had done casual volunteering before, it wasn’t until a team volunteering day organised by Aspen Medical that Casey began looking for a long-term commitment. That day, she says, reignited her passion.

“Talking to the other volunteers and hearing from the group leader about how much it meant to them really stayed with me,” she explains. “A friend who had stayed at RMHC said I’d be a great fit, so I applied, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

One experience stands out vividly in Casey’s mind. During a shift, she met a woman who had given birth at just 23 weeks. The woman was caring for a baby with a stage 4 brain bleed and had recently lost a child just months before.

“We had a quiet chat in the kitchen. Later, she went to clean up a small mess and I offered to do it for her so she could sit and enjoy her breakfast. She was so grateful for that little gesture. It made me realise how something that seems so small can mean everything when someone is going through a hard time.”

Casey credits Aspen Medical’s supportive culture for turning her interest in volunteering into a consistent practice.

“Without the paid volunteer leave, I probably would’ve kept just talking about volunteering,” she admits. “That first team day made all the difference. Aspen Medicals support through volunteering, workplace giving, and community donations really guided me toward taking action.”

Casey’s story is a testament to the power of giving back and the ripple effect one person can have on a community.

“Volunteering isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s wiping a bench or folding towels. But it matters. And I’m proud to be part of a company that encourages that kind of impact.”
