Recently, members of our clinical team who specialise in delivering care on board sea vessels, completed the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved Certificate of Safety Training at Maritime Career Training on the Sunshine Coast.
The Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) issued by AMSA meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, as amended (The STCW Convention).
Upon successful completion of the course candidates apply to AMSA for the marine qualification – Certificate of Safety Training, which is valid for five years.
The course content includes:
- Fire prevention and fire fighting
- Personal safety and social responsibilities (PSSR)
- Personal survival techniques (PST)
- Security awareness training (SAT).
Aspen Medical Operations manager Shamiso Rahman said that the dual qualifications of a clinician and seafarer is increasingly vital in modern shipping, where crew welfare and operational efficiency are paramount.
“The integration of clinical expertise with seafaring skills presents a significant advantage to maritime operations. A professional who is both a qualified clinician and a trained seafarer offers multifaceted contributions to the safety, efficiency and wellbeing of the crew and the vessel,” said Shamiso.
Congratulations to our colleagues Amy O’Brien (Intensive Care Paramedic), Andrew Lee (Paramedic) and Saina Woolley (Registered Nurse) on completing the course and being ready to provide comprehensive medical support and health promotion for our maritime clients in addition to a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced at sea.
