We welcomed Menslink CEO Martin Fisk to our offices in Canberra as part of Mental Health Week, 4 - 10 October 2015.
Martin spoke about how rates of diagnosable depression and anxiety disorders were the same amongst young men and young women (under 25): between one in four and one in five of them in any given year. However the stand-out difference was that young men were three times less likely to seek help. Only around one in ten ask for advice or help with the rest suffering in silence.
He discussed the critical importance of solid role models - mentors - in young men's lives to guide them to healthy ways of dealing with life's challenges and strong emotions and how Menslink helps through our Silence is Deadly schools' program, as well as the organisation's free counselling and volunteer mentoring programs.
