On Wednesday, 7 May, Aspen Medical in Fiji celebrated a significant milestone with the graduation of the inaugural class of 37 nurses from its Graduate Nurses Program, an intensive 12-month program specifically designed to address the clinical skill gap and enhance the quality of patient care.

The Graduate Nurses Program is structured for nurses who have recently completed their internships and want to join the Aspen Medical team at Ba and Lautoka Hospitals. This is a one-of-a-kind post-internship nursing program in Fiji that focuses on specialised midwifery and general nursing disciplines. It enables the graduates to refine their skills and establish a clear path towards advanced specialities and opportunities.

Throughout the program, the 37 graduates benefited from personalised mentorship and participated in monthly educational sessions led by clinical experts. These sessions addressed key areas such as emergency nursing, maternity, and paediatrics care, ensuring a comprehensive and practical training experience.

Mereani Turagabeci, a graduate of the Aspen Medical program said, “This program incorporates a continuing competence framework to help us identify our learning and developmental needs. After each learning day, it has enabled us to reflect on the impact of continuing competence.”

Aspen Medical Chief Operations Officer in Fiji, Barry Herberts, said, “As a nurse myself, it’s warming to see that the profession in Fiji is in great hands and that they will continue the incredible work nurses everywhere do on a daily basis.”

The next intake of the Aspen Medical Graduate Nurses Program will be in July 2024, which coincides with the completion of the nurses' internship at the Ministry of Health.
