Background

Aspen Medical has delivered remote healthcare services on multiple offshore energy platforms located around Australia’s coastline. These operations are typically hundreds of kilometres from shore, in highly regulated, safety-critical environments. The nature of the work—long rosters, physical demands and isolation—places increased pressure on health systems, requiring a robust, self-contained clinical capability.

To support the safety and wellbeing of offshore personnel, Aspen Medical provided comprehensive onsite medical services, including emergency response, primary care, fitness-for-work programs and occupational health surveillance.

Approach

Aspen Medical has provided clinicians to offshore installations across both coasts. Personnel included remote-area doctors, intensive care paramedics and experienced remote nurses, supported by dedicated health operations management and 24/7 topside clinical governance.

Key services included:

  • 24/7 medical emergency response, including medevac and trauma care
  • primary healthcare and management of non-urgent illness and injury
  • return-to-work and fitness-for-work evaluations
  • medical surveillance, drug and alcohol testing and health risk assessments
  • onsite clinics equipped for diagnostics, observation and minor procedures
  • health promotion, including infection control, hygiene and wellness programs
  • incident investigation, case management and workforce education
  • coordination of evacuations and support for mass casualty planning.

Each clinic was tailored to the operational risks and workforce profile of the platform, with data-led health monitoring and preventative interventions in place.

Results

Across multiple platforms and project years, Aspen Medical:

  • treated thousands of non-urgent clinical presentations, reducing the need for off-platform transfers
  • maintained readiness and performance in managing high-acuity events, including trauma and cardiac care
  • conducted targeted surveillance for fatigue, mental health and fitness-to-work, supporting safer operations
  • contributed to a measurable reduction in unnecessary evacuations, improving operational efficiency
  • reduced downtime associated with travel to shore for medical appointments or follow-up.

Outcome

Aspen Medical’s offshore services delivered critical health support in some of the most challenging and remote environments in Australia. By embedding experienced clinicians and aligning with each client’s safety protocols, we:

  • improved clinical outcomes through early intervention and onsite management
  • enhanced workforce confidence in healthcare services, improving morale and retention
  • reduced operational disruption by avoiding unnecessary off-platform medical transfers
  • strengthened the health resilience of Australia’s offshore energy workforce.

This work reflects Aspen Medical’s proven capability in delivering safe, compliant and cost-effective clinical services in high-risk, remote industrial settings.
