On Tuesday 18 October 2022, the first open heart surgery in several years and the first of a permanent and ongoing capability in the Fijian public health system, took place successfully.

The patient, a 55-year-old male, is recovering well at Lautoka Hospital.

Our thanks to the Fijian Government and Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) for entrusting us to bring this lifesaving procedure to the people of Fiji.

Aspen Medical Group CEO Bruce Armstrong travelled to Fiji to offer his support to Aspen Medical - Fiji CEO Annette Owttrim and her team as the day unfolded.

At the press conference announcing the successful surgery he said, "I would like to congratulate Annette and the entire team on delivering a new era of the international standard surgical capability to the people of Fiji. Fijians who may have previously thought about going overseas for medical procedures can now get the same standards in Fiji.

"We thank the people of Fiji for their patience and understanding as the pandemic disrupted our plans to start some of these services. Our primary goal will continue to be patient safety and positive outcomes, as we roll out more world-class healthcare services in Fiji."
