Successful private clinic leads to contract to manage four Ebola Treatment Units on behalf of the US Government

Aspen Medical has operated a private healthcare clinic in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, since March 2014. It is used extensively by the diplomatic and expatriate communities and is able to provide access to fixed winged, Aero-Medical Evacuation (AME) services within West Africa via a dedicated AME configured jet aircraft.

The clinic helped to relieve the pressure on the Monrovian public health system as the EVD outbreak grew in intensity. In late 2014, Aspen Medical was subcontracted by PAE on behalf of USAID to provide clinical management services to four Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs) in Liberia. PAE cited Aspen Medical’s “clinical expertise, strict adherence to safety protocols and exhaustive scenario-based training” as being a factor in the awarding of the contract.

An international team of healthcare professionals and support staff were led by an American team of senior clinicians from Aspen Medical’s US subsidiary.

The company resourced and managed four 25-bed capacity ETUs located at Barclayville, Bopolu, Gbediah Town and Zorzor from late 2014 and continued to do so until the end of May 2015.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Liberia Ebola-free on 9 May 2015. Aspen Medical subsequently had its contract extended by US Government agencies until October 2015 to help maintain Liberia’s Ebola-free status.
